In the rapidly evolving group insurance landscape, flexibility and speed-to-market are essential—especially when scaling solutions for small businesses. Our challenge was clear: we needed a standardized, scalable plan design that could be priced and launched quickly without sacrificing compliance or internal efficiency.
The Catalyst: Simplifying to Scale
As our portfolio expanded, we recognized that our traditional custom quote process created delays and inefficiencies for groups under 50 lives. We were reinventing the wheel with every quote. To stay competitive, we needed to move from bespoke to standardized—without losing value.
The Problem We Were Solving
We weren’t just looking to create a shelf product. We needed to design rate plans that complied with regulatory filing requirements, fit within our administrative systems, and resonated with brokers and clients. This required input from actuarial, sales, operations, and IT teams—each with different priorities.

My Approach
I led the cross-functional team through each phase of development:
Exploration: Conducted ROI and competitor analyses to understand the opportunity and validate our pricing strategy.
Discovery: Defined the product parameters, coordinated with actuarial for rate filings, and worked with IT to ensure our systems could administer the plans.
Execution: Directed filing submissions, system configuration, and communication planning for internal and external audiences.
This initiative wasn’t just about developing a plan—it was about building a launch model we could repeat and improve upon.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Actuarial, sales, marketing, and operations were all critical to success. I led weekly stand-ups and cross-functional reviews to ensure transparency and alignment. As challenges emerged—from DOI questions to system build constraints—we tackled them collaboratively with proactive scenario planning.
Results We Delivered
Successfully launched a new suite of shelf-rated plans tailored to small business needs
Streamlined the implementation and quoting process, reducing turnaround times
Built repeatable processes for future standardized plan launches
Enhanced our market competitiveness with faster response to broker requests
What I Took Away
This project demonstrated that scalability doesn’t mean sacrificing quality—it means finding clarity in complexity. Standardization, when done strategically, is a growth accelerator. It also reaffirmed the value of early cross-functional engagement and building for reuse, not just one-time success.
